Courtesy Lease Expiration Letter I'm Confused On What A "month To Month" Lease Is In CA?

I'm confused on what a "month to month" lease is in CA? - courtesy lease expiration letter

Once in the apartment for 2 years, my colleagues and I renew our lease with our landlord and changed yearly rent of one months. I decided to leave and thought that giving the owner notice of 30 Day was that I am no longer bound by the lease and can not find a replacement to my place, take care of the lease. My landlord said that each month only applies if the 3 housemates will not find someone to take my place, so I continued to pay rent for months - even when I move!

Is that correct? Nowhere in the contract that states that every month is applicable if the 3 housemates to go and mentioned that I gave my landlord 30 days notice, "the latest from my apartment. Said when I spoke, they did not need 30 days ago and it was just a courtesy to my roommate. It makes no sense, because the Treaty provides that owners must have 30 days notice!

If you can not find a replacement for me, I am legally obligated to pay the month'm not it?
